Aromatherapy and the use of Essential oils - 9/13/16

Should a Christian use Aromatherapy? Should a Christian use essential oils?

Perhaps the mere asking of these questions leaves you incredulous that such questions should even be asked. Perhaps you scoff at the notion that essential oils and their use is even remotely wrong, let alone the possibility that it is a sin and against the word of God. Maybe you have seen “good” come out of using essential oils. You may know of people who have benefitted from the use of essential oils and Aromatherapy. But I ask you, “What does the Bible say?”

After all, the word of God is the final authority for it says, “Let God be true, and every man a liar.” (Rom. 3:4) Yes, I am a man and that includes me! The ONLY authority you should heed in the matters of faith and practice is the word of God. So I ask you, “If the word of God condemns the use of essential oils, will you repent?” I ask you, “If the word of God condemns the practice of Aromatherapy, will you repent?”

You may retort, “Will you?” And my reply is, “Yes, I already have! As well as other alternative medicine practices that I was doing.”

Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils seems so innocent. Just put a few drops of Lavender essential oil on a cotton ball and hold it up to your nose and inhale. There, now you will be able to go to sleep. What’s wrong with that? Oh, but the question should be, “What does the word of God say about that?”

This page on will evolve over time since there is much to cover and if I waited until all was complete it would be quite awhile before I could ever load the page. So this is a short introduction to the subject of Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils.

By way of introduction let me begin with Galatians
5:16 This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. :17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would. :18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law. :19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, :20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, :21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like…

There are 18 things listed as works of the flesh, but what is important is that these are works. In other words, in the process of committing these sins; acts or works, take place in their commission. At the rudimentary level all you need to know is what the works are and then as a child of God, DON’T DO THEM!!! I emphasize this because when you get into the study of witchcraft there is a subtle temptation to focus on an object, instead of the act. What do I mean by this?

In the practice of Acupuncture there is a tendency to focus on the needle, the cupping, the herbs, and the insertion of the needle, but that is only a deception to draw you away from what is really happening. It’s not about the needle, it’s about the act and the intercourse with the unclean spirit they call “Chi.”

So too, it is the same way with essential oils. The temptation is to focus on the oils. How are they made? What do they consist of? Are they natural? But as we get into this study you will find that the issue is not the oils themselves. The issue concerns the works that are done with those oils, and who performs these works and why. By concentrating on what the word of God says you avoid the subtle deception of focusing on an object instead of the works. By doing this you are able to discern what is pleasing to the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit. Pleasing the Lord as well as submitting to the Holy Spirit ought to be your prime aspiration of life.

So I ask you again, “If you realize something grieves your Saviour, will you repent?” If you realize essential oils and their use grieve the Lord Jesus Christ, will you cease their use, get rid of them from your house and life, and most important of all, will you repent of having used them?

Nothing yet in this article has been proved one way or the other. Are you surrendered to the word of God, and is Jesus Christ more important to you than all? Are you submitted to God’s holy words? These are questions you and I must face every day of our lives until we get our new bodies which will never sin again.
